Yixing Zisha Clay – the Heart of Chinese Teaware
The clay from Yixing, Jiangsu province, known collectively as Zisha (Purple Sand Clay), is among the most treasured materials in the world of tea. Despite its name, Zisha ranges in colour from deep brown and red to soft purplish hues.
Unlike ordinary clay, Zisha is rich in minerals, iron, and quartz, giving it a naturally porous structure after firing. This allows the tea to breathe during brewing, maintaining an ideal temperature and enhancing the depth and aroma of each infusion.
Over time, the clay absorbs the essence of tea, developing a soft sheen and a unique aroma – a living memory of your tea sessions. For this reason, each Yixing teapot is traditionally dedicated to one type of tea.
The most renowned varieties include:
Zini (Purple Clay) – dark brown to purplish, excellent for oolong and pu-erh teas.
Hongni (Red Clay) – warm red tone, perfect for red and green teas.
Zhuni (Vermilion Clay) – lighter, denser clay with a fine texture and lustrous finish, ideal for delicate, high-grade teas.
Yixing Zisha is not just a material – it is a living substance that evolves with use, reflecting the patience and spirit of the tea drinker.
